唐突だが、ちょっと面白い本を紹介しておこう。2006年12月に海外で出版された英語の本で、ベン・ヒルズ氏の著書『Princess Masako: Prisoner of the Chrysanthemum Throne (English Edition)』Kindle版である。

Ben Hills’s fascinating portrait of Masako and the Chrysanthemum Throne draws on research in Tokyo and rural Japan, Oxford, and Harvard and from more than sixty interviews with Japanese, American, English, and Australian sources-Masako’s and Naruhito’s friends, teachers, and former colleagues-many of whom have never spoken publicly before, shedding light on the royal family’s darkest secrets, secrets that can never be openly discussed in Japan because of the reverence in which the Emperor and his family are held.

 

And it poses some questions that few in Japan would dare to ask-questions about the role of the emperor, the place of women, attitudes toward mental health and IVF, and the power of the bureaucracy. But most of all, this is a story about a love affair that went tragically wrong.

 

BEN HILLS is an award-winning Australian journalist. In 1969 he was hired as an investigative reporter for The Age. He also worked for the Sydney Morning Herald. In 1991 he won the Walkley Award for investigative reporting. His books include Blue Murder, Japan Behind the Lines, and Princess Misako: Prisoner of the Chrysanthemum Throne.

次にこれの和訳。

ハンサムな王子様と結婚し、豪華なお城に移り住み、それからいつまでも幸せに暮らす――それは多くの女性が抱く夢だ。けれども、小和田雅子にとっては、そうではなかった。どこをとっても現代的で、古風なしきたりとは相容れない雅子は、ハーバード大学やオックスフォード大学で教育を受けた聡明な女性だった。だが1993年、彼女は外交官としてのキャリアを捨て、皇太子徳仁と結婚した。

 

『Princess Masako』は、「菊のカーテン」の後ろを覗き、外からはうかがい知れない日本皇室の世界を見せる興味深い作品だ。本書では、世界最古の王朝の断絶を避けるために、なんとしても世継ぎとなる男児を生んでもらいたい宮内庁が、迷信めいたしきたりを雅子妃に強いる経緯が描かれている。成婚当初は、2600年の伝統を持つ皇室の古びた空気に雅子妃が新風を吹き込むものと期待する声もあった。だが13年後のいま、42歳の雅子妃は、適応障害との戦いが世界各国の紙面を賑わす悲劇の女性になっている。

 

雅子妃と日本皇室を描いたベン・ヒルズの魅力的な本書は、東京や日本の地方都市、オックスフォード、ハーバードなどの取材に基づいて書かれたものだ。また、雅子妃や皇太子の友人、恩師、元同僚をはじめ、日本、アメリカ、イギリス、オーストラリア各国の関係者にもインタビューを敢行している。その多くが、これまで公には語ることのなかった人たちだ。本書はそうした情報をもとに、皇室のもっとも暗い秘密――天皇や皇室に対する畏敬の念から、日本では決しておおっぴらに語られることのない秘密に光を当てている。

 

さらに、天皇の役割、女性の地位、メンタルヘルスや体外受精に対する考え方、官僚の持つ権力など、日本人のほとんどが敢えて口にすることのない疑問をも投げかけている。だが何よりも本書は、悲劇的な失敗に至った恋愛の物語でもある。

 

ベン・ヒルズはオーストラリアを代表するジャーナリストで元東京特派員。オーストラリアのピューリッツァー賞と言われるウォーキー賞、1年でもっとも活躍したジャーナリストに与えられるグラハム・パーキン賞を受賞している。著書に『Japan: Behind the Lines』（特派員として日本に滞在した3年間を記録した本）、『Blue Murder』（西オーストラリアにあるCSR社ウィトヌーン・アスベスト鉱山の公害被害者が起こした裁判を追った本）がある。

この本には雅子様はもちろん、今上天皇も登場する。ここでは秋篠宮に関する件を、まずは英文でご覧いただきたい。

Ten years dragged by. In the summer of 1990 the prince’s younger brother Akishino, the mustachioed catfish-loving good-time boy of the royal family, married his girlfriend Kiko Kawashima, the daughter of a Gakushuin University professor, becoming the second prince to take a commoner as his bride. This was a shattering breach of imperial precedent in more ways than one.

 

Protocol dictates that the older brother marry first. But this was not entirely the fault of Naruhito, the reluctant bridegroom , Akishino’s carousing around the nightclubs of Tokyo and the flesh-pots of Bangkok had become the talk of the town. According to the journalist Edward Klein, he had earned the nickname ‘Fast Hands’.

 

Kenichi Asano, a professor of journalism at Doshisha University and a long-time critic of the royal family says he knows two of the women the prince had affairs with, one the daughter of a personal friend. The Kawashimas were also insisting he make an honest woman of their daughter. So it was decided that the prince had to be taken out of circulation before any more permanent damage was done to the royal reputation.

ここで、少し英語のレクチャーを。

“moustachiored catfish-loving good-time boy” は、“口ひげを生やしたナマズ好きのチャラ男” という意味。そして “This was a shattering breach of imperial precedent in more ways than one.” は、“これは複数の点で、皇室の慣わしに対する衝撃的な違反だった” と訳すことができそうだ。

続く”protocol” も、計算機関係のほうではデータの送受信の規則をそのままカタカナで “プロトコル” としているが、ここは “慣習” と訳し、”Akishino’s carousing around the nightclubs of Tokyo” は “秋篠が東京のナイトクラブでどんちゃん騒ぎを繰り返したこと” と訳せる。

そして、”バンコクの肉鍋”について。実は “flesh-pots” で “歓楽街” という意味があり、この場合の”肉”は”酒池肉林”の”肉”で”鍋”は”人間の欲望が煮えたぎる鍋”。秋篠は東京のナイトクラブやバンコクの歓楽街では結構有名な方だったとある。”the talk of the town” は “街の噂”。これ以上は私の口からは言わせないでほしい。

“Fast Hands” は “女に手の速い野郎” とでも訳したほうがわかりやすいだろう。“had affairs with” は関係を持っていたという意味。そして “make an honest woman of” という慣用句には “（関係した女性を）正式な妻にする”という意味がある。つまり川嶋夫妻は「早く娘の紀子を正式の妻としなさい」と主張されているのである。

さらに “circulation” は “噂”、”秋篠の女漁りがひどすぎる” という噂のことである。このあたりは、晩年の豊臣秀吉や中国の毛沢東に通じるものがある。毛沢東についてはこちらの動画を参照されたい。

まだ続けることはできるが、これだけでも大分話の輪郭がつかめてきただろう。要するにここで語られているのは、秋篠と紀子の結婚の舞台裏である。こんな話は当時も今も、大手のマスコミから発信されたことはない。発信されるのはいつも美談である。

秋篠は今上陛下の5歳年下で、結婚したのが1990年6月、彼が24歳のことであった。対して当時、皇太子であった陛下は1993年6月に雅子様と結婚、彼が33歳の折のことであった。

陛下が32歳の頃、少しでも興味を示した女性は、峻拒するか、自殺をほのめかすか、あるいは慌てて別の男性と結婚してしまうかして、殿下を途方にくれさせたという。極めつけは、行き先も告げずどこか外国へ出奔した女性がいたこと。これはニュースにもなった。雅子様との結婚も簡単に決まったわけではない。

あれから30年ほどの年月が経っている。いずれ天皇になるという悠仁君と結婚したいという女性はいるのだろうか？　いても小室圭君の母君のような女性では困るのである。

ここまで書いてきて、この本の日本語版『プリンセス・マサコ』が、藤田 真利子氏の翻訳により2007年に出版されていることに気づいた。

しかし同時に、この英語の本、ならびにその和訳の出版に関して、宮内庁や外務省が暗躍するとんでもない事件が背後にあることも知った。それについては稿を改めて論じることにしたい。
